📘 Instructional Moment Monday 📘
This week’s tip is for our elementary students!

✨ Building a strong vocabulary is the key to becoming a great reader. The more words students know, the better they understand what they read.

🥤 Building Connections at Bluefield Primary! 🎉

This morning, students at Bluefield Primary School were welcomed with a juice box and a smile from Sgt. Amanda Moore and Sgt. Kevin Ross of the Bluefield Police Department.

The event marked the kickoff of a new partnership with Operation Juice Box, a national program that helps build positive relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Thanks to this initiative, 200 juice boxes were donated for our students to enjoy!

We are grateful to our community partners — the Bluefield Police Department, Mercer County Child Protect/Starting Points, and Kathryn Kandas, Grants Project Manager for the City of Bluefield — for supporting our schools and helping us create meaningful connections for students. 💙

Operation Juice Box began in 2016 and has shared over 25,000 juice boxes nationwide, fostering trust, kindness, and community spirit.

Langston Williamson 3rd Grade Student Bluefield Intermediate and Mr. Toman, catching up at The Railyard.  This amazing and talented young man approached Mr. Toman to thank him for the honor roll cards he receives. Mr. Toman reminded him “You’re the one doing all of the hard school work!  Keep being you and doing your best.” Wishing a great school year ahead for this incredible (and polite) youngster.   #KidsFirst

ReachOut (“Let’s Talk”) is now available for every Mercer County Schools student (K–12).
When students are worried about schoolwork, friendships, family, or their own safety, they can ReachOut for help—day or night.

What is ReachOut?
ReachOut connects students to licensed counselors, a trusted student-support provider. Counselors listen, support, and—when needed—coordinate with your school administrator so students get the right help quickly.

Who can use it?
All MCS students (K–12).

How students access ReachOut
Click the “Let’s Talk” icon on any school computer.
Scan the QR code on ReachOut posters around school.
Tell a trusted school adult—we can help submit a ReachOut together.

What to expect
A counselor responds and helps the student problem-solve.
We respect privacy; if there’s a safety concern, appropriate adults will be involved to keep everyone safe.

Questions? Contact your school social worker.

📚✨ At last night’s Mercer County BOE meeting, we were inspired by Bluefield High School’s Brianne McKinney and Tiffany Jones!

🌟 Ms. McKinney shared how she brings literature to life through creativity and collaboration. Her outstanding work has earned her an invitation from the WVDE to present at the S.A.I.L. Conference in Charleston this summer.

🌍 Ms. Jones spoke about her incredible opportunity in Washington, D.C., where she toured the National Archives and collaborated with social studies teachers from across the nation.

👏 Mercer County Schools is proud of our dedicated educators who represent our county with excellence at the state and national level! #MercerCountySchools #ExcellenceInEducation
