At this week’s meeting, Mercer County Board of Education members completed Local School Improvement Council (LSIC) training provided by the WV Department of Education.
What are LSICs?
Each school in West Virginia has an LSIC made up of parents, teachers, staff, and community members. LSICs work together to set goals, identify needs, and recommend improvements that support student learning and school success.

At last night’s Board of Education meeting, Coordinator of Pupil Services Amanda Aliff shared details about the new ReachOut Program available to every Mercer County Schools student (K–12).
🌟 What is ReachOut?
ReachOut (“Let’s Talk”) connects students with licensed counselors who listen, support, and—when needed—coordinate with school administrators to ensure help comes quickly.
👩🎓 Who can use it?
All MCS students, grades K–12.
💻 How to access:
• Click the “Let’s Talk” icon on any school computer
• Scan the QR code on ReachOut posters around school
• Ask a trusted school adult for help submitting a ReachOut
🔑 What to expect:
A counselor responds promptly, helps the student problem-solve, and respects privacy. If there’s a safety concern, appropriate adults will be involved to keep everyone safe.
ReachOut is here day or night—because no student should face worries about schoolwork, friendships, family, or safety alone.

🥤 Building Connections at Bluefield Primary! 🎉
This morning, students at Bluefield Primary School were welcomed with a juice box and a smile from Sgt. Amanda Moore and Sgt. Kevin Ross of the Bluefield Police Department.
The event marked the kickoff of a new partnership with Operation Juice Box, a national program that helps build positive relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Thanks to this initiative, 200 juice boxes were donated for our students to enjoy!
We are grateful to our community partners — the Bluefield Police Department, Mercer County Child Protect/Starting Points, and Kathryn Kandas, Grants Project Manager for the City of Bluefield — for supporting our schools and helping us create meaningful connections for students. 💙
Operation Juice Box began in 2016 and has shared over 25,000 juice boxes nationwide, fostering trust, kindness, and community spirit.
Langston Williamson
3rd Grade Student
Bluefield Intermediate and Mr. Toman, catching up at The Railyard. This amazing and talented young man approached Mr. Toman to thank him for the honor roll cards he receives. Mr. Toman reminded him “You’re the one doing all of the hard school work! Keep being you and doing your best.”
Wishing a great school year ahead for this incredible (and polite) youngster.
