Mercer County BOE Votes to Make Mask Wearing Optional
At the February 22nd meeting, the Mercer County Board of Education voted to move its mask guidance from mandatory to optional. This means that mask usage in buildings and on school buses will be optional for both students and staff.
This decision is being made as Mercer County and Mercer County Schools positive case numbers are going down after the increase during the winter holidays. Masks may also be required at individual school sites if Covid-19 transmission rates warrant a mask requirement.
Mercer County Schools will still have masks available to anyone wanting one. We will also continue communicating with the Mercer County Health Department about special cases and any concerning trends in classrooms or schools. The superintendent may institute practices if determined necessary in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The ultimate goal is to protect our students and prioritize learning. Given the quick spread of the Omicron variant and its rapid clinical course, it has made contact tracing in schools impractical when combined with the newly reduced timelines for quarantine and isolation set by the CDC. With that being said, Mercer County Schools will not perform contact tracing on behalf of the Mercer County Health Department.
All Mercer County schools are now reporting positive cases to a new WV DHHR tracking survey, which appears on Fridays at https://wvde.us/covid19/school-covid-dashboard/

Go out to Craft Memorial Library tomorrow for a fun Leap Into Science event after school.

Dear Brushfork Elementary Families,
Exciting news! We have partnered with Books Are Fun and their Book Blast program to help build our students ‘home library’. For over 30 years, Books Are Fun has been a trusted partner in promoting literacy.
Today, our students learned about the Book Blast Program, literacy, and the importance of having their own books at home. Tonight, we ask you to take 10 minutes to support our Help Build My Home Library initiative for the kiddos.
CLICK HERE TO START HELPING OUR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS:
http://bookblast.booksarefun.com/BrushforkES
Here are the steps:
Click the link above.
Create your child’s personal page.
Send invitations to at least 10 friends or family members to support our students (Don’t worry, all the information you provide is secure and only used for this program.)
Sign the ‘Treasure Map’ and have your child turn it in tomorrow to earn their Treasure Map Prizes.
Why I love this program:
It’s guaranteed to put new, age-appropriate books into the hands of every student!
100% of all contributions go toward new books and classroom supplies. Books will be delivered to the school a few weeks after the event ends.
The book list is fantastic! It’s attached; check it out.
It will take you less than 10 minutes, and there is NO financial requirement of you.
More books in your homes equal more pages being read! That’s the goal. We’re hoping for 100% participation.
Thank you for helping our school and community.

Congratulations to our 21-22 Service Person of the Year! We cannot express the love and gratitude that we hold for our Kindergarten Aide here at Brushfork. Mrs. Tonya is a blessing to every person she touches in life. She gives new meaning to being a difference maker every single day. She works nonstop to ensure that our students basic needs are met. We know that we cannot teach them until we reach them, and this is just what Mrs. Tonya does not only in her classroom, but in the entire building. She is our school mom. She has a connection that allows us to foster deeper relationships with every child. When she sees a problem, she fixes it without hesitation, without question, and without fail. She understands the importance of helping our children and families at home and how that ties directly back to student learning and comfort in the classroom. Although that is beyond her realm, she makes time to help anyone in need in our school. She has built lasting relationships with our families, and they know that she is always available to help or provide them with the tools and resources needed to ensure they are stable. Tonya’s relationship with students and the staff at Brushfork provides her with the opportunity to improve our student’s ability to learn and grow every single day. She has devoted her life to making our world a better place, one family at a time. Her purpose in life is centered around solving problems, changing lives, and helping others succeed. Her heart is bigger than the universe and it shows every single day in the work she does for our Bengals.
