Good evening Melrose Cardinals,
I have several reminders, so this will be a long message. First, thank you for helping out with our hygiene drive. We collected over 600 items! Mrs. Billings' class won the popcorn party for collecting the most items. Speaking of popcorn, Popcorn Fridays are back! We will begin selling popcorn for next Friday. It will be $1 per bag. Shoes, if you are cleaning out your child's closet and have some shoes to donate for our clothes closet, please send those in. We appreciate all the donations sent in this year. We have Dr. Seuss Week coming up. A flyer was sent home with what is happening each day. Monday is Mismatched Monday. We are looking forward to seeing all those crazy mismatched outfits! Group photos and make-up pictures for the yearbook are on Tuesday, March 1. If your child is on one of our teams, battle of the books, robotics, math field day, etc send their t-shirts with them. They will have their pictures made in those with their team. Make up pictures are scheduled for March 2 for our fifth grade fundraiser. This will be a spring themed backdrop. Again, flyers were sent home. PTO will host their annual spring book fair the week of March 7-10. Parking on the church lot will be tight the next few months. Construction on our new windows and HVAC system will begin. We are super excited to get all the upgrades. The construction guys will need to park on the church lot. They will not start parking until after morning drop off, but pick up will have limited parking spaces. Please stay in line and wait if possible. Please do not block the driveway by the gate. Your patience and understanding is appreciated. The outcome is worth the hassle of limited parking.
Have a great weekend,
Mrs. Bennett

PVMS choir and band met with our fifth graders who will attend PVMS next year. They gave advice on going to a new school.

Mercer County BOE Votes to Make Mask Wearing Optional
At the February 22nd meeting, the Mercer County Board of Education voted to move its mask guidance from mandatory to optional. This means that mask usage in buildings and on school buses will be optional for both students and staff.
This decision is being made as Mercer County and Mercer County Schools positive case numbers are going down after the increase during the winter holidays. Masks may also be required at individual school sites if Covid-19 transmission rates warrant a mask requirement.
Mercer County Schools will still have masks available to anyone wanting one. We will also continue communicating with the Mercer County Health Department about special cases and any concerning trends in classrooms or schools. The superintendent may institute practices if determined necessary in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The ultimate goal is to protect our students and prioritize learning. Given the quick spread of the Omicron variant and its rapid clinical course, it has made contact tracing in schools impractical when combined with the newly reduced timelines for quarantine and isolation set by the CDC. With that being said, Mercer County Schools will not perform contact tracing on behalf of the Mercer County Health Department.
All Mercer County schools are now reporting positive cases to a new WV DHHR tracking survey, which appears on Fridays at https://wvde.us/covid19/school-covid-dashboard/

Twosday fun!

We are ready for Tutus, Ties, and Tennis shoes.
